I never go anywhere without a sketchbook and some pencils. I am particularly fond of Prismacolor Black and Stabilo 8046 pencils and am not really that picky about the paper that I draw on. I do like 110 lb cover stock for it’s heavy weight. I like the really cheap bound sketchbooks you can pick up at Borders.
I use bound sketchbooks because it is hard to tear out a sketch. I believe that you should not tear out and throw anything away when sketching. At some point you might want to look back and see if you have made any progress. If you have torn out all the sketches it will be pretty hard to quantify any progress.
I also never erase in my sketch books. My preference of pencils makes it hard to erase and if you spend time erasing two things have happened.
1. You are erasing and not drawing.
2. You have probably become too involved with making a pretty picture instead of learning how to draw.
